RE: Council Reorganization and Service Area Elections Update
We wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the Fall Recruitment Season for Scouting. As all the schools are now back in session, our work is just beginning. This year more than ever it is important for us all to be focused on rolling out the “welcome mat” to incoming Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Our goal is to significantly reduce the attrition rate in the council by at least ten percent. Historically, we have not done a bad job of being able to recruit youth to Scouting, its keeping them in Scouting that has been the challenge.
Our council reorganization was created with that in mind- to improve program delivery and significantly reduce attrition. In order for that to happen, we need to increase our unit service to make sure that each youth out there is getting the full Scouting experience. We need to make sure that the Scouting program is being delivered to all parts of the council. An important part of that delivery is YOU- our scouting volunteers.
While we understand that sometimes change might seem daunting- nothing has changed at the program delivery level. We still need to recruit youth, deliver great programming and retain them. What have gotten easier are the items that would sometimes bog down our district level volunteers--activities such as marketing, membership, and finance. Those activities will now be handled at the service area level.
We had the opportunity to see a few of you during the tribe/vibe orientation sessions held in the past month. We plan on hosting additional town hall chats in the months to come to continue to orient you to the new service area structure.
As you will see on the updated timeline for the rollout- we are on track. But we need you to stay engaged and continue to run your units and be open to the new alignments. The benefit of these service areas is that you are able to share best practices across the ‘old’ district boundaries. Your Scouting professionals are able to see how other units succeed and share that with you.
We have one action item coming up on October 30th the service area elections. We will need our CORs to be involved in this process. Please note this is a date change from September 25th. The nominating committee has been hard at work on the slates for the two service areas.
In closing, we’ll leave you with the following quote as it allows us to stand powerfully in the future that brings a lot of opportunity for the youth of the Chicago Area Council.
“Always remember that the future comes one day at a time… Dean Acheson”
Remember to focus and take it day by day.
